Despite 21 points and 10 rebounds from junior forward Erin Arnold (Kiski Area H.S.), the Bobcats could not keep up with Carlow College on Feb. 9, suffering a 73-60 defeat. Sophomore guard Ann Sral (Bishop Guilfoyle H.S.) was the only other Bobcat in double figures with 10 points. Sophomore guard Torey Auld (Seneca Valley H.S.) scored nine points and dished a game-high six assists for the Bobcats.
The loss to Carlow followed an 84-62 victory at home against conference foe Frostburg State University, which brought the UPG Women’s Teams record to 7-3 in the AMCC.
UPG took its first lead against FSU
three minutes into the game and never looked back.
Both Arnold and Sral scored 11 points
while grabbing eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Arnold was
honorable mention for AMCC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week with
averages of 16 points and nine rebounds. Freshman forward Amy Ploskunak
(Plum H.S.) nearly got a double-double as she scored eight points and grabbed
nine boards.
But for UPG, the story of the game was freshman forward Ashley Beanner (Mt. Pleasant H.S.) who scored a career-high 15 points.
Now winners of eight-of-their-last-eleven games, the Bobcats are in third place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference entering the final week of the regular season.
Overall, the Bobcats are 9-13 with an AMCC game against LaRoche on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at home. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. The Bobcats end their season on Saturday, Feb. 16 at AMCC-front-runner Penn State-Behrend. The UPG Women’s team will host a first round playoff game on February 20th, the time and opponent to be determined.
After trailing most of the way, the Bobcats suffered a tough 92-85 defeat to Frostburg State on Feb. 6. The conference loss dropped the Bobcats to 4-6 in the AMCC, which kept them in fourth place.
Junior forward Garret Treese (Hempfield Area H.S.) once again had a strong performance with a season-high 23 points. Freshman forward Ryan Moye (Washington H.S.) scored 17 points and collected seven caroms for UPG. Moye also handed out a game-high eight assists.
Sophomore guard Scott Winfrey (Uniontown H.S.) and freshman guard Nate Watkins (Schenley H.S.) each scored 10 points and handed out four assists. Watkins also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
To end their week, the Bobcats hosted Newport News on Feb. 9. Despite having four players in double figures and shooting a solid 45-percent as a team, the Bobcats could not stay with the bigger Builders losing 100-80.
Watkins scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Moye scored 16 points for the Bobcats. Winfrey chipped in with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals while junior guard Jeff Fisher (Bethel Park H.S.) dished a game-high seven assists. Treese scored 10 points and added one block and one steal.
Moye was honorable mention for AMCC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week with averages of 16.5 points, six rebounds, and 4.5 assists.
The Bobcats, 7-16 overall, host LaRoche on Wednesday, Feb. 13 with an 8 p.m. tip-off. A win will guarantee the Bobcats the Bobcats the fourth seed in the AMCC tournament later in the month and therefore a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Bobcats end their week at Penn State-Behrend on Saturday, Feb. 16.
