Other first-half standouts for the Bobcats were freshman forward Nicole Kushner (Canon McMilla H.S.) and senior guard Briane Krebs (Conemaugh Township H.S.). Kushner scored seven first-half points while Krebs brought down five rebounds.
The Bobcats struggled early in the second half and trailed by as many as 11 points before going on a 10-2 run to pull within three points with nine minutes to play.
However, the Panthers would quickly return with a run of their own and the Bobcats fell behind by nine points, 65-56, at the 6:25 mark. The Bobcats would continue to fight and answered with a 19-6 run to capture a 75-71 win.
Sophomore forward Erin Arnold led the Bobcats with 15 points and also one key blocked shot. Kushner scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for UPG. Matovich and freshman guard Torey Auld (Seneca Valley H.S.) scored 12 points and 11 points, respectively, for the Bobcats.
Following the victory over Pitt-Bradford, the Bobcats traveled to Penn State-Altoona on Saturday, Jan. 27. Despite another solid effort from Kushner, who scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, the Bobcats fell to Penn State-Altoona, 67-57.
Kushner received nomination for AMCC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week. In two games for the Bobcats, Kushner scored 27 points, hauled down 15 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats remain in second place in the AMCC with a 10-6 overall record and 6-2 record in conference play and will play two league contests this week. They will host AMCC foe Lake Erie on Wednesday, Jan. 31 and AMCC rival LaRoche on Saturday Feb. 3.
Unfortunately for the Bobcats, their struggles continued as they dropped two AMCC contests last week by a combined 44 points.
The Bobcats opened the week at home against Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday, Jan. 24. For the first half, the Bobcats shot 38-percent from the field and a solid 46-percent on three-pointers but still went into the locker room trailing 41-31 at the half. Senior guard Josh Sapotichne (Greensburg Salem H.S.) scored 10 first-half points while freshman guard Scott Winfrey (Uniontown H.S.) scored seven points and collected a team-high four rebounds.
The Bobcats’ struggles continued in the second half as Pitt-Bradford pulled away, handing the Bobcats a 105-76 loss. For the contest Winfrey scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Bobcats in both categories. Sapotichne and junior guard Jeff Fisher (Bethel Park H.S.) each scored 15 points for UPG. Freshman forward Garret Treese (Hempfield Area H.S.) scored 12 points and hauled down six rebounds for the Bobcats.
On Saturday, Jan. 27 the Bobcats traveled to Penn State-Altoona to face the Cougars, whom the Bobcats defeated in a December home game for UPG’s lone win of the season.
However victory wasn’t meant to be this time for the Bobcats as they fell 90-75. Treese scored a game-high 25 points on 10-11 shooting. Treese also grabbed five rebounds in the loss. Sapotichne and Winfrey scored 16 points and 13 points, respectively. Sophomore forward Mike Dudek (Woodland Hills H.S.) scored nine points and eight rebounds for the Bobcats.
Treese earned nomination for AMCC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week after scoring 37 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, handing out four assists, and collecting four steals in two games for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats, at 1-17 overall with a 1-6 conference record, host Lake Erie on Wednesday, Jan. 31 and LaRoche on Saturday, Feb. 3.
