The Bobcats were in action three times last week and went 1-2, including a one-point overtime loss to Penn State-Behrend, in a match-up of the top two teams in the AMCC. The Bobcats are currently 9-7 overall and by virtue of the loss have fallen to second place in the AMCC with a 4-1 record in conference play.
The Bobcats opened their week on Monday, Jan. 15 with a trip to Waynesburg College (Waynesburg, Pa.) and came away with a 57-44 victory. The Bobcats took a 24-20 lead into the locker room at halftime and never looked back. For the game, the Bobcats shot 42 percent from the field and 25 percent from behind the three-point stripe.
Freshman forward Nicole Kushner (Canon McMillia H.S.) led the Bobcats with 20 points and four steals. Freshman guard Tory Auld (Seneca Valley H.S.) and senior forward Briane Krebs (Conemaugh Township H.S.) also scored in double figures for the Bobcats, recording 12 points and 10 points, respectively. Auld also led the Bobcats with four assists. Auld and Krebs each grabbed six rebounds for UPG. But unfortunately for the Bobcats, the triumph at Waynesburg would be the Bobcats’ lone victory for the week.
The Bobcats traveled to Mt. Aloysius on Wednesday, Jan. 17 for a matchup with the Lady Mounties, an NAIA school. The Bobcats fell behind quickly and trailed 39-25 at halftime. The Bobcats fought hard in the second half and played the Lady Mounties basket for basket but dropped the game 69-55. Sophomore guard Jordan Fox (Hempfield Area H.S.) and Auld scored 13 points each to lead the Bobcats’ scoring charge. Auld also dished out a game-high six assists and also pulled down seven rebounds. UPG sophomore forward Erin Arnold also made a strong contribution with 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Kushner added nine points, two rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots, and two steals.
The Bobcats ended their week with a game at AMCC leader Penn State-Behrend. The Bobcats, despite shooting just 32 percent from the floor in the first half, held a 20-17 lead at intermission. The Bobcats shooting improved slightly, to 37 percent, but the Bobcats were outscored 29-26 in the second half. At the end of regulation, the score stood at 46-46. The Bobcats struck first in the extra period as Kushner hit a layup 15 seconds into the extra session. The two teams exchanged baskets throughout the overtime period but Behrend scored a layup with just 11 seconds remaining. The Bobcats shot to win fell off the rim as the Behrend Lions secured a 56-55 win.
Kushner continued her strong week with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Arnold led all scorers with 18 points while Fox scored 14 points for UPG.
The Bobcats were in action twice last week but dropped both games to run their record to 1-15 overall and 1-4 in AMCC play.
The Bobcats opened the week at home against Westminster on Monday, Jan. 15. The Bobcats shot 43 percent from the field in the game but lost 89-71. Freshman guard Scott Winfrey (Uniontown H.S.) led all scorers with 20 points. Winfrey also grabbed five rebounds for the Bobcats. Senior Guard Josh Sapotichne scored 17 points, hauled down five rebounds, and dished out a team-high five assists for UPG. Sophomore forward Mike Dudek (Woodland Hills H.S.) scored six points and did a solid job on the glass, collecting 10 rebounds, including three offensive boards.
After the loss to Westminster, the Bobcats made the trip to Penn State-Behrend on Saturday, Jan. 20. The Bobcats played strong for the first 30 minutes but could not hold on as Behrend proved to be too much and again came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard with an 86-60 loss. Sapotichne scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Bobcats while Dudek scored 15 points and brought down six boards.
Both the Men and women return home on Wednesday, Jan. 24 to host Pitt-Bradford. The Men will play the early game at 6pm and women will play the night-cap at 8pm. On Saturday, Jan. 27 the Bobcats will return to the road to face Penn State Altoona with the Women playing at 6pm and Men at 8pm.
