Bobcat Weekly
Updates
The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats had a 2-0 week thanks in large part to the play of sophomore guard Annie Sral (Bishop Guilfoyle H.S.). In two games, Sral scored 28 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, handed out six assists, and had five steals for the 5-10 (overall) Bobcats. Sral was an honorable mention for Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week.
The two victories pushed the Bobcats’ winning streak to four and helped propel them to first place in the AMCC with a 4-1 record in conference play. UPG can break the tie atop the AMCC standings on Wednesday Jan. 23 as they host AMCC perennial power Penn State-Behrend. The Bobcats close their week at AMCC foe Pitt-Bradford (Bradford, Pa.) on Saturday, Jan. 26.
On Wednesday, Jan.16 the Bobcats made the trip to Pittsburgh for an AMCC matchup against LaRoche. The Bobcats feasted on the Red Hawks, cruising to a 69-55 win behind Sral’s 18 points, seven boards, three assists, and four steals.
Other standout performers for the Bobcats were freshman forward Becky Joyce (Carrick H.S.) who recorded 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal and sophomore guard Torey Auld (Seneca Valley H.S.) who scored ten points and dished out six assists. Junior forward Erin Arnold (Kiski Area H.S.) also played a solid game with 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
After the victory at LaRoche, the Bobcats made their way back to Chambers Hall Gymnasium for a non-conference game against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets.
After some shooting problems in the initial five minutes, the Bobcats recovered to take a big 37-27 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Bobcats proved too much for Waynesburg, going away with a 79-62 victory.
Arnold had another big performance with 24 points, five caroms, three assists and four steals. The Bobcats had four players with 10 points, including Auld who had a game-high nine assists.
The Bobcats, despite the solid play of freshman forward Phil Grenda (Mt. Pleasant H.S.), were on the wrong end of the scoreboard twice last week.
On Wednesday, Jan. 16 the Bobcats traveled to LaRoche but could not keep up with the Red Hawks in a 76-66 loss. Grenda led the Bobcats with 13 points, five rebounds, one assist and two blocks.
Freshman guard Nate Watkins (Schenley H.S.) racked up five assists and four steals to go with seven points and four rebounds while freshman guard Ryan Moye led the Bobcats in scoring with 18 points. Sophomore guard Scott Winfrey (Uniontown H.S.) scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss.
On Saturday, Jan. 29 the Bobcats fell to Lincoln University 91-85. Grenda played a strong game with 24 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Grenda’s performance was enough to earn him an honorable mention for AMCC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week.
Watkins and freshman guard Kevin Conlon (Bellwood-Antis H.S.) scored 11 points each with Watkins adding four assists. Freshman John Pulley (South Western H.S.) scored 12 points on 4-6 shooting, all from three-point land.
The Bobcats are 2-3 in AMCC play (5-11 overall) good for fourth place in the conference. UPG hosts Penn State-Behrend on Wednesday, Jan. 23 and travels to Pitt-Bradford on Saturday, Jan. 26.
