Led by junior forward Erin Arnold (Kiski Area H.S.), the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats outgunned Frostburg State 87-78 in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match-up on Jan. 9. Arnold put on a brilliant performance with 30 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal in the road victory.
Arnold followed up her performance with 13 points, three rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal in a 79-33 home victory over AMCC opponent Lake Erie on Jan. 12. For her outstanding two-game performance, Arnold was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week.
Against Frostburg, the Bobcats also got solid individual performances from sophomores Torey Auld (Seneca Valley H.S.) and Annie Sral (Bishop Guilfoyle H.S.) and freshman Becky Joyce (Carrick H.S.). Auld, the Bobcats’ career leader in assists, scored 11 points and handed out a UPG single-game record 11 assists in the win. Sral scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds to go with two steals. Joyce scored eight points and collected nine caroms for UPG.
Against Lake Erie, the Bobcats’ defense proved too much as UPG held the storm to just six first-half points on 2-25 shooting from the floor. Against the Storm, Joyce made a big contribution with 14 points and six rebounds while sophomore Jordan Fox (Hempfield Area H.S.) connected on 3-6 from three-point range for 11 points and grabbed five boards. Freshman Bethany Sersen (Norwin H.S.) scored a career-high 10 points and collected five rebounds for the Bobcats. The victory was the Bobcats’ tenth-straight AMCC win at home.
The Bobcats are now 2-2 in the AMCC and 3-10 overall. The Bobcats travel to AMCC opponent LaRoche (Pittsburgh, Pa.) on Wednesday, Jan. 19 and host Waynesburg in a rare Sunday game on Jan. 20. Game times are 6pm and 1pm, respectively.
On Jan. 9, the Bobcats squandered a 33-29 halftime lead at conference foe Frostburg State in a 71-67 loss. UPG lead until the final 3 minutes of the game when Frostburg took their first lead. After falling behind, UPG connected on a bucket by Ryan Moye and immediately retook the lead 65-64. However, that would prove to be the final lead of the game for the Bobcats.
Sophomore Scott Winfrey (Uniontown H.S.) led UPG with 14 points, connecting on 4-9 from three-point territory. Winfrey also picked up a steal and added two assists while freshman Kevin Conlon (Bellwood-Antis H.S.) scored 13 points and grabbed three rebounds. Freshman Ryan Moye (Washington H.S.) played a solid game with eight points, four rebounds and three steals. Freshman Phillip Grenda (Mt. Pleasant H.S.) chipped in with nine points and four rebounds.
Following the loss to Frostburg, the Bobcats returned home for a game against AMCC foe Lake Erie on Jan. 12. Holding just a 38-36 lead at the half, the Bobcats put Lake Erie away in the second stanza to cruise to an 86-78 victory.
Grenda scored 22 points, grabbed four caroms, and dished out two assists while picking up two steals in the win. Conlon distributed the ball effectively, handing out five assists to go with 14 points and five rebounds for the Bobcats.
Winfrey was a perfect 4-4 from three-point range and finished with 15 points, four assists, and three rebounds. Coupled with his performance in the Frostburg game, Winfrey’s effort earned him honorable mention for Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week.
Moye added 16 points and dished four assists while blocking two shots.
The win pushed the Bobcats to 2-2
in the AMCC and 5-9 overall. They next do battle on Wednesday at 8pm at
LaRoche before making the trip to Lincoln University (Lincoln University,
Pa.) on Saturday, Jan. 19.
