Bobcat Weekly
Updates
The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats opened up the New Year January 5th on the road against a tough Thiel team. The Bobcats played well, scoring 50 points in the second half. However, the effort wasn’t enough as the Bobcats dropped a 79-70 defeat.
In the first half, both teams shot 33-percent from the floor but the difference was free-throw shooting as the Bobcats converted just 4-12 from the charity stripe and trailed 32-20 at the half.
In the second half, the Bobcats shot an excellent 51-percent from the field as a team but UPG could not withstand Thiel’s offensive firepower and fell to 1-10 for the season with a 1-1 record in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play.
Against Thiel, sophomore guard Annie Sral (Bishop Guilfoyle H.S.) paced the Bobcats with 13 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Sophomore Torey Auld (Seneca Valley H.S.), Sral’s backcourt mate, also dished out five assists to go with 10 points. Junior Erin Arnold (Kiski Area H.S.) scored 12 points and hauled in eight caroms for the Bobcats. UPG newcomer Abbey Cunningham scored 10 points in 21 minutes of play.
UPG is back into confrence play this week as they travel to Frostburg State on Wednesday January 9 and then face AMCC foe Lake Erie at home on Jan. 12. Both games start at 6pm.
The Bobcats saw action twice last week, going 1-1 to push their record to 4-8 overall.
The Bobcats’ first game was a home contest against the Juniata Eagles. After outscoring Juniata 29-27 in the first half, the Bobcats surrendered 36 second-half points while only scoring 22 in a 63-51 defeat. UPG played well but was only able to muster 6 field goals in the second half and only one point in the final 5:43 of the contest.
Freshmen Nate Watkins (Schenley H.S.) and Phile Grenda (Mt. Pleasant H.S.) were the only Bobcats in double figures, scoring 13 points and 11 points respectively. Watkins also led the Bobcats with five rebounds and three steals and handed out a game-high three assists. Freshman Ryan Moye (Washington H.S.) also had a solid effort, scoring eight points and collecting three rebounds.
Two days later the Bobcats were in action again as they made the trip to Westminster, MD for a game against Western Maryland College. UPG stormed to a 41-22 lead at halftime and never looked back as they disposed of WMC 92-80. It was the second straight game in which the Bobcats had a tremendous effort defensively and on Saturday the offense matched the output.
Watkins and freshman Kevin Conlon (Bellwood-Antis H.S.) each scored 10 points with Watkins also collecting four steals and grabbing seven rebounds. Grenda played a solid all-around game with 12 points, eight boards, and four assists. Freshmen guards Frank Barder (Souderton Area H.S.) and Nick Tomsko (Montour H.S.) each scored nine points in the win.
As a team, the Bobcats shot a blistering 60-percent from the floor including 65-percent from three-point land.
UPG travels to Frostburg State for an AMCC game on Jan. 9 and hosts Lake Erie in another AMCC contest on Jan. 12. Both games are schedules to start at 8pm.
