Biological Sciences (Bachelor of Science)

Biological Sciences Health Track

The Biological Science program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. This track in the major provides students with the necessary background for admission to graduate school as well as medical, dental, or veterinary school, and selected allied health professions.  A total of 36 credits in Biological Sciences are required.

1. All students must complete the following core courses:
 
BIOSC 0170,0070 Foundations of Biology 1 and Laboratory
BIOSC 0180,0080 Foundations of Biology 2 and Laboratory
BIOSC 0350 Genetics
BIOSC 1961, 1962 Senior Research I and II 

2. All students must complete one, but no more than two of the following courses (maximum 6 credits) or meet this requirement by substituting a 1000-level course in Cellular Biology, Ecology, or Physiology:
 
BIOSC 0360 Cell Structure and Function
BIOSC 0371 Ecology
BIOSC 0380 Molecular Cell Biology
BIOSC 0470 Biology of Aging

3. All students must complete at least three upper level laboratories.

4.At least 16 credits of additional course work from the courses listed below are required:
 
BIOSC 1000 Biochemical Concepts
BIOSC 1090 Introduction to Biopsychology
BIOSC 1200, 1210 Vertebrate Morphology and Laboratory
BIOSC 1480, 1490 Embryology and Laboratory
BIOSC 1535 Sensation and Perception
BIOSC 1760 Immunology
BIOSC 1810 Macromolecular Structure and Function (Biochemistry 1)
BIOSC 1820 Metabolic Pathways (Biochemistry 2)
BIOSC 1830 Biochemistry Laboratory
BIOSC 1850, 1860 Microbiology and Laboratory
BIOSC 1870, 1880 Animal Physiology and Laboratory
BIOSC 1915, 1916 Laboratory Internships 1 and 2
BIOSC 1940, 1950 Molecular Biology and Laboratory

Students must earn a C grade in all Biological Science courses used to fulfill major requirements.
In addition, all students are required to complete the following (with a grade of C- or better):
 
CHEM 1110, 0120 General Chemistry I and II and Laboratories
CHEM 0310, 0320 Organic Chemistry I and II
CHEM 0330, 0340 Organic Chemistry I and II Laboratories
PHYS 0110, 0111 Introduction to Physics 1 and 2
PHYS 0212 Introduction to Physics 2 Laboratory
MATH 0220 Analytical Geometry and Calculus I
and either
MATH 0230
Analytical Geometry and Calculus II
(Recommended for Pre-Med students)
or
STAT 1131
Introduction to Statistics
or
CS 0004
Intro to Computer Programming - Basic

Biological Sciences Environmental Science Concentration

The Biological Science program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. This concentration will prepare students for employment in environmental careers as well as for graduate work in environmental science. A total of 36 credits in Biological Sciences are required.

1. All students must complete the following core courses:
 
BIOSC 0170,0070 Foundations of Biology 1 and Laboratory 1
BIOSC 0180,0080 Foundtions of Biology 2 and Laboratory 2
BIOSC 0371 Ecology
GEOL 0860 Environmental Geology
BIOSC 1961, 1962 Senior Research I and II

2. All students must complete one, but no more than two of the following (maximum 6 credits) or meet this requirement by substituting a 1000-level course in Cellular Biology, Ecology, or Physiology:
 
BIOSC 0350 Genetics*
BIOSC 0360 Cell Structure and Function
