UPG became a charter member of the newly formed Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC), an NCAA Division III conference. Their first season began with the start of the 1997-98 academic year with competition in men's and women's basketball, soccer golf, women's tennis, softball and volleyball. In 2002, with the addition of a cross country team, UPG became an official member of the AMCC (Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference) NCAA Division III Conference.
