ENGR 0715- Engineering Applications for Society

Thomas Simpkins

Hi, my name's Tom Simpkins, and I'm a mechanical engineering major at the University of Pittsburgh. I currently live in and am originally from the city of Clairton on the outskirts of Pittsburgh. I grew up in Hershey, however, as I attended the Milton Hershey boarding school in western PA. I chose to attend the University of Pittsburgh mainly because of my desire to be back near home and my family. I have greatly enjoyed my time here because of the amazing people I have met as well as the landscape of the University throughout the city. Next semester, I am choosing to enter into the mechanical engineering program because I enjoy the design and construction of products. I have always been interested in how things work and am constantly taking things apart. I've also been involved in construction most of my life because of my parents working in the home remodeling and repair business. I also worked in stage production doing both design of the sets as well as building and painting sets and running an entire musical my junior year. Outside of school, I'm really interested in music in general. I play guitar and drums and was involved in drumline my senior year. I'll listen to most things from rock to punk to metal to even some country and enjoy learning the various musical styles. Other than that, I play video games, mostly role-playing games and music/rhythm games. I'm big into reading also, mostly sci-fi/fantasy stuff and Stephan King novels, though I haven't had much time to read recently. In high school, I used to run cross country and track and play hackysack every morning, though hackysack is the only one I still do today.
