Supercourse: Just in Time Lectures

The project designed to provide the school teachers of USA and world-wide with high quality lectures about the nature of terrorism attacks and other man-made and natural disasters

The tragic events of September 11th, 2001 and first discovered anthrax cases in October 2001 caught all of us by surprise. Teachers in the US and in the whole world were asked many questions about the nature of these events but oftentimes they did know how to alleviate the fear associated with possible threat of terrorism and other disasters. Supercourse team decided to help the teachers and instructors world wide and provide them with high quality lectures about September 11th and terrorism

The first lecture, "Understanding September 11" was created by the Supercourse team in conjunction with Global Health Network Supercourse faculty. All comments we received about the content of this lecture were carefully evaluated and addressed. They can be viewed at http://www.pitt.edu/~super1/assist/tlecture.htm This lecture was translated into several languages by the members of Global Health Network. The lesson plan for teaching this lecture in elementary and middle schools was created by Mike Krestar and Andrew Leopold from Gateway School District of PA. Our special thanks go to Drs. Maureen McClure and Sue Ann Goodwin, our colleagues from University of Pittsburgh School of Education, for their help with the design and distribution of these lectures.

The second lecture covering the topics of anthrax and bioterrorism prevention was created by a Nobel Prize winner Joshua Lederberg, with the help of the Supercourse team. Joshua Lederberg, a research geneticist, is Sackler Foundation Scholar and President-emeritus of Rockefeller University in New York. His life-long research, for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1958 (at the age of 33), has been in genetic structure and function in microorganisms. He has been actively involved in artificial intelligence research (in computer science) and in the NASA experimental programs seeking life on Mars.

Both lectures are available in the PowerPoint format and the Supercourse format (see below). If you have any comments about these, please contact ?????
