Exercise will strengthen back muscles, increase blood supply to the vertebral area, improve mood and alter the perception of pain. Six RCTs and they all claimed to have reduced pain and to reduce sick leave. Again, this is the younger working group. But this is strong positive evidence. However, the type of exercises being tested varies all over the place. There are many, many different types of exercise. There have been studies comparing physical therapy, focused physical therapy, with doing type of exercises called aerobics but this group was people exercising together. I don’t think it is clear what type of exercise helps. As many studies as there are they all seem to see the exercise a little bit differently; many people have their own regimes of exercise so there is a lot that needs to be found out about exercise.
