We asked the kids starting at age 10 about their substance use. At age 16, 17% of the kids in our cohort are using alcohol at least three to four times a week, 11% of them are drinking daily, 29.5% of them have ever had a binge, which is five or more drinks on any one occasion, and about 40% of the binge drinkers do that at least weekly. On tobacco use, about 23.5% of them smoke daily, 27% of the population smokes half a pack a day. Five percent of them smoke marijuana daily, and most of them started using between the ages of 12 and 13. They started tobacco first at the average age of 12, and then went on to alcohol at 15, and then to marijuana slightly later.
