Finally, there are probably specific changes in pregnancy that make women more sensitive to certain insults. We know, for example, that inflammatory responses are turned on in normal pregnancies. The bottom line is that there’s some sort of interaction and the mother contributes important things resulting in reduced perfusion and making her sick.
