Some 50 years ago, an atypical pattern of diabetes mellitus was described by Hugh Jones, the J-type. Soon after Zuidema wrote similarly about a Z-type and several others were to write confirming these atypia. In 1981, Morrison wrote of a formes frustes in Jamaica, and published supportive laboratory findings for the aetiology by 1986.
