In order to address the issue of value from primary care, evidence of its utility was sought from published international and country-level studies.

Two studies used data from the mid to late 1980s and mid 1990s and from 11 and 13 countries, respectively. Data were collected specifically for the purpose of the studies. Only industrialized nations with populations over five million and availability of needed data were included.
