Malformed infants had significantly lower mean birth weights than infants of same birth order in families with no birth defects, on average around 200 grams.

The mean birth weights for the non-malformed siblings, on the other hand, were basically equal to that of their counterparts in unaffected families. This was the case both for siblings born before and after the birth of a malformed infant.
