1.  Setting up a screening service should include a smear registry, training of staff, a working relationship with a lab which includes the lab also accepting responsibility of follow-up of patients with abnormal smears as well as a relationship with the treating institution.

 

2.  The aim of screening in the PHC setting should be to screen every women in the target group once in her lifetime at the age of 40 years

 

3.  Ways of ensuring that the target group is screened could include personal invitations, targeting casual attenders to the clinic or targeting companions of women using MCH/FP services.  Special events or surveys could also be organized.

 

4.  Management of women with abnormal smears should include counselling, repeat cytology, management/treatment as well as  follow-up.
