Antonovsky (1979) used the phrase ‘sense of coherence’ to imply peoples ability to adapt to their environment and be ‘healthy’ in the midst of various stressors. He advocated for the salutogenic approach in the study of disease as an alternative to the pathogenic approach, which concentrated mainly on origins of disease. Later Antonovsky (1987) describes further this sense of coherence-SOC (through empirical evidence) to have three components.
