Osteoporosis is our most common human bone disease. Osteoporosis is characterized by compromised bone strength that increases the risk of fracture. Bone strength is the integration of 1. the amount of mineralization in a given volume, 2. the architecture, 3. turnover (resorption of old bone and deposit of new bone), and 4. damage accumulation of the bone. Most often osteoporotic fractures occur at the lumbar spine, hip (proximal femur), and the wrist (distal radius).
