This was done a long time ago to demonstrate that oxygen is metabolized and to find the rate at which it is metabolized, i.e. oxygen uptake or oxygen consumption.

With modern analytical techniques a wide variety of vapors can be investigated, provided that they are not appreciably absorbed on the chamber walls or animal fur (or that a correction is made for this) and do not react with them.
