Although marital status was not a significant predictor, lack of social support in the form of poor marital relations had a direct health effect for both genders. However, the stresses of caring for the psychosocial needs of a family in the home have traditionally fallen on women in addition to other responsibilities in Russia, and may have compounded the difficulty of coping with conditions of social inequality as compared to men.
