A device-associated infection is not present or incubating at the time of the patient’s admission to the ICU, but becomes apparent during the ICU stay or within 48 hours after transfer from the ICU to another acute care unit within the hospital. An inpatient ICU is a designated unit where there is appropriate equipment and specialized staff to provide continuous care, according to the particular medical needs of a defined and limited class of critically ill patients.
