- And the final one is a project which was carried out by the International Union for Health Promotion and Education on behalf of the European Commission to make the case for health promotion in a way that will be convincing to European Union Bureaucrats

- All of these initiatives are interesting in and of themselves and have, and will continue to yield organized information on the effectiveness of health promotion. But it is interesting to note that they have mostly been done in isolation from each other and tended to l use different approaches to collating and analyzing the existing evidence. This suggests to me and to others that it is time that we "got our act together"`and start to work cooperatively to develop rigorous methods, standards and approaches that respect the uniqueness of health promotion and that we can all use. To this end, the Canadian Consortium for Health Promotion Research has carried out an anlysis of 17 frameworks for synthesizing evidence (http://www.utoronto.ca/chp)

- Our own Centre, in addition to developing a framework for consolidating evidence on the effectiveness of health promotion which is useful to practitioners, has been having discussions with the Cochrane Collaboration to attempt to influence the manner in which they carry out reviews of health promotion interventions, possibly though using our framework

- Although there is a long way to go, we feel that we have had some influence and that there is a possibility of having an impact on their procedures. I would therefore encourage all of you who are interested to get involved

- This brings me to the fourth challenge--identifying ways of sharing the evidence on the effectiveness of health promotion
