Vitamin A deficiency is a major problem in many poor countries.  There's simply not enough beta-carotene in the diet of a lot of people to produce the Vitamin A that is necessary when babies are starting to develop.  If they don't get enough Vitamin A they go blind, they have defects in their muscles, defects in their immune system.
