Survival is adequate as a basic summary of disease expression. In particular, it is a very important standardized indicator of sickle cell severity for comparison with other diseases. But long-survival does not mean a life of low morbidity. and so survival can only hint at the burden of sickle cell disease on the patient. The use of clinical endpoints and patient centered information is likely to give a more sensitive account of severity.
