In the next two to four decades more accurate information on median survival in SS disease will become available from patient groups like the the Jamaican Cohort Study of Sickle Cell Disease, ascertained at birth and prospectively followed. Until then, survival summaries in homozygous sickle cell disease will continue to depend on the appropriateness of the techniques used and on the assumptions made.
