Once the type of variable is decided, the next question is how can this variable be collected. Quantitative variables are better collected as true values and not categorized. The number of boxes used in the questionnaire corresponds to the maximum number of digits expected.

For qualitative variables, the categories are clearly defined and written in the questionnaire. Codes are assigned to each category and the number of boxes correspond to the maximum number of digits. In case of ordinal data, categories and codes are arranged either in ascending or descending order.
