Resources for policy-oriented epidemiology. Many books have appeared, although the only current one dealing specifically with policy is my own (I believe that another is in progress). Several older ones are now out of print, perhaps because they were entirely descriptive, with no presentation of methods (the books lose interest when the case studies are no longer topical). Brownson and Petitti's excellent Applied Epidemiology: theory to practice is relevant throughout, and its closing chapter is entirely on epidemiology and health policy. Kue Young's Population Health: concepts and methods combines epidemiology with behavioural science, while Petitti's Meta-Analysis, Decision Analysis, and Cost-effectiveness Analysis also contains much relevant material. Gray's Evidence-based Healthcare is excellent for adapting the methods of clinical epidemiology, although it focuses on health care policy rather than health policy in general.
