Self rated material situation (essentially a measure of deprivation) was an important determinant of poor health and remained significant in the final model.

Unemployment also had impact on health, but did not remain significant in the final model.

We also looked at income (income from principal employment) but no relationship was found. The same has been seen in studies in Russia and Bulgaria and it is thought to reflect the importance of the informal economy.

To put these results in context, it might be worth saying something about the economic situation. Amongst respondents in this survey:
- 2/3 had been unemployed in the last 12 months
- 1/3 were unemployed at present
- 2/3 had experienced delays in their salary in last 12 months
- 1/3 had experienced non payment of their salary in last 12 months.

And according to government data, the official average income is just $8.4 pcm (2000).
