Numerous studies have validated the use of self-perceived health as a measure of overall health. These studies come not just from west but also from east, including studies in Poland and Lithuania.

Improving our understanding of the determinants of self rated health can therefore improve our understanding of determinants of more objective indicators of health that are more expensive and difficult to study.
