Some children do acquire a hearing impairment post-natally usually as a result of infection or trauma which can occur at any age. The commonest cause is bacterial meningitis. Acquired impairments account for approximately 7% of the population of hearing impaired children.

Thus acquired impairment is only part of the explanation of the rise in prevalence over age.
