The prison population is predominantly young and male and it might be anticipated that they would be fit and healthy.

In fact these young men have often neglected their health or have had little or no understanding of health and hygiene.

Upon entry they will often have:

Untreated dental disease

Skin infections

Venereal disease

They may have addiction problems with alcohol or drugs, they are heavy smokers and drinkers.

Their physique may be poor from an inadequate diet and no attempt at physical training.

They may have untreated mental illness-depression, anxiety.

There is a high risk of suicide, particularly among the remand prisoners.
