The influenza mortality rate (IMR) of the 2009 H1N1 influenza “pandemic” in the USA was much lower than the IMR of an average influenza season and was not more severe in children since the age specific IMR, in children (0-17), was lower (almost a half lower) compared to the IMR in an average influenza season.  The major finding in 2009 was that the IMR in the elderly (65+) was more than an order of magnitude less (almost 12-fold less) than the IMR in an “average” influenza season!
