Homeless persons are heavy users of the health care system.

For many homeless persons, the Emergency Dept is their primary source of health care, and this can have a significant impact on hospitals serving areas with large numbers of homeless people.  For example, more than 15% of patients seen at the Emergency Dept. at St. Michael’s Hospital are homeless.

Homeless people also have high hospitalization rates and tend to have prolonged hospital stays.
