Patients lined up by hundreds at tent each morning to be examined for return to duty. They would take a cotton-tip swab and roll down their own lower lid for inspection by doctor, who did not touch them. Co-authors and I did not acquire conjunctivitis. Most patients were on quarters for 10 – 14 days. Epidemic on base lasted about 3 months and affected 3000 patients. A double-masked trial of Viroptic (anti-Herpes agent), steroid, and artificial tears showed no difference in severity of disease or return to duty time.  A prospective, masked clinical trial of trifluridine, dexamethasone, and artificial tears in the treatment of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis.
