Where are we now?

Once the vision, mission and values of the group have been determined, the next step in the strategic planning process is assessing the current environment and factors that can impact the mission of the group. Many methods have been described for this process, but perhaps the most commonly used is the SWOT Analysis. Strengths and Weaknesses refer to internal characteristics of a group and relate to matters concerning resources, programs and organizations in key areas. Opportunities and Threats examine external environmental factors. The SWOT Analysis forms the basis for strategic planning as groups discuss ways to capitalize on strengths, minimize or eliminate weaknesses, take advantage of opportunities and avoid or manage threats.

There are many other tools for defining the community.
