US Statistics:
Cancer: Blacks have a cancer death rate about 35 % higher than whites (171.6 vs 127.0 per 100,000).

Lung Cancer: The death rate for Blacks is 27% higher than for whites (49.9 vs 39.3 per 1000,000).

Infant Mortality: Infant death rates among Blacks, American Indians, and Hispanics in 1995 /1996 were all above the national average of 7.2 deaths per 1,000 live births.

SC Statistics:
Hypertension: High blood pressure is highest among the Black population. Black males are twice as likely to be hypertensive as White males.

Diabetes: Black men and women are the most frequently hospitalized race in South Carolina. Black men are 2.5 times as likely to die of diabetes than White men and Black women are four times as likely as White women to die of diabetes. Diabetes is also present in 80% of Catawba Indian households.
