Even though countries had some success while trying to combat Chagas disease on their own, many of them realized that the disease did not respect national borders since there were often problems concerning the transmission of the parasite across national borders.  The transmission would then cause the infection/infestation of previously non-affected areas and even of previously treated and cleaned areas. Hence, individual country efforts were being countermanded.
