Activity

Ask students to brainstorm to generate a list of examples of voluntary associations. The longer list the students can generate, the better. Special attention should be paid to any groups with interests particular to the area(s) of study represented in the class, or to any with which students have had personal experience.

Examples:

Disease- or issue-specific organizations: heart, lung, cancer, kidney, AIDS, mental health, MADD

Advocacy groups: disabled, developmentally delayed, minorities

Professional and industrial organizations: AMA, ANA, APHA, AHA, etc; and their state and local counterparts

Coalitions with health as only or major topic: Healthy Communities initiatives, parish nurse program
