RVF virus is cytopathic and replicates to high titre. It is thought that after infection, the virus moves from the skin to draining lymph nodes, where it replicates. Efferent lymphatics spread the virus throughout the body. The red blood cells (RBCs) and the liver are invaded. The virus may also cross the blood-brain barrier and infect neurons and glia.
