This is partially the result of greater accuracy in recording official data, better health treatment centers in Moscow, as well as greater environmental pollution than in Russia as a whole. Moscow residents ranked poor street sanitation, air and drinking water pollution as major ecological problems in the city in 1994 and 1998. Automobiles and industrial production within the city are cited as primary causes of pollution (Fomichev, www.mos.ru , 1999).
