In 1995, overall mortality in Moscow was 1505.3 deaths/100,000, of which 57% were due to cardiovascular diseases, 17.1% to cancer, 12% to infectious/parasitic diseases, and nearly 13% to accidents (State of the Environment (www.mos.ru), 1998). Similarly, the proportion of 1993 cardiovascular deaths, in St. Petersburg, was 57% of overall mortality, 16% were due to cancer, and 15% to accidents (St. Petersburg Profile, 1995) (Next Table).
