Today, birth defects are typically encountered in the fields of genetics and neonatology.  Interpretations and treatment come from medical professionals.  Apart from the few cases featured in the media, birth abnormalities also exist in the private rather than the public sphere. These atypical births are only shared with the immediate family and medical and support staff.  As we will see later, unusual births were often public events.
