Age-adjusted stroke mortality in Japan was highest for both men and women in 1965, which was the highest in the world at that time.

Since 1965, we observed dramatic decline in stroke mortality in both men and women. Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) started to decline around 1960 and cerebral infarction (CI) started to decline around 1970.
