It was also lower than the life expectancies of Mauritius, Ecuador, or Azerbaijan. Mexico, even after major natural disasters and political problems in the 1990s, has a life expectancy six years higher than Russia's. Life expectancy at birth for males in Russia in 1998 was about 61 years, which ranked below Egypt, Indonesia, or Paraguay. Among Russian men, moreover, health status was worse for those of working age, and barely 40 percent of 15-year-olds would survive to age 65. This state of affairs is bleaker than for men from the African island of Mauritius in the late 1950s, who enjoyed better health than today's Russians (Zdavookhraneniye Rossiyskoy Federatsii, 1999; World Development Report 1998/99; World Health Statistics Annual, 1993, 1996).
