The respectability of this form of research has had its ups and downs.  When we started, hypothesis-seeking research was fairly respectable.  Later it was looked down upon, as data-dredging.  Recently, especially with the advent of genome-wide scans, it has become quite respectable as hypothesis-free research.  My colleagues and I have done quite a bit of data-dredging in areas other than pharmaceuticals, with some valuable results (next slide).
