In contrast to cancers of the upper GI tract, rates for cancers of the lower GI tract have tended to increase world-wide. Colorectal cancer incidence in western Europe has increased but better early detection and treatment have helped bring about a decline in mortality. Possible reasons for this increase include the decline in dietary fibre content, reduced consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and increased protein consumption.
