John Morgan, 1735-1789,  had studied at the University of Edinburgh and several other European medical schools and returned to the American colonies determined to found a medical school on the same basis as the University of Edinburgh.  After conferring with William Shippen, Morgan brazenly declared the founding of a medical school as part of the University of Philadelphia in 1765.
