The first major step in organizing colonial medicine on a large scale had been taken in 1751‑52 when  Dr. Thomas Bond, with the aid and encouragement of Benjamin Franklin, founded the first "modern" hospital in the colonies, the Pennsylvania Hospital, in Philadelphia.
