The smallpox epidemic finally ended by 1722, having recorded 5,889 cases with 844 fatalities.  Bolyston's variolation experiment had been highly successful. Yet this story exemplifies how medical practices were closely tied to the political and religious issues of that period. There were several overriding conflicts that imposed themselves on this pioneering inoculation controversy.
